Session: Defining Your Role

Designed to prepare experienced managers to take on advanced leadership roles in an environment of transformational change.

The manager’s job is to keep things running smoothly. The leader’s job is to adapt the organization to the disruptive forces that threaten its very existence.

Leaders must envision the future and align people behind that vision – despite the obstacles that come their way.

They must think beyond their areas of expertise and concern themselves with the strategic issues underlying the overall business. They must think creatively and inspire others to work collaboratively.

Here is a seminar that will help you develop these crucial leadership skills.

You’ll gain an understanding of how to develop strategies to shape and lead transformation and how to foster a fully engaged workplace poised to capitalize on the opportunities ahead.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Develop an effective leadership style that meets the needs of our turbulent times
  • Energize and inspire others to excel – even in the face of shrinking staffs and budgets
  • Negotiate collaborative working relationships at all levels in the organization
  • Foster creativity and innovation

Who should attend

To gain maximum benefit from this seminar experience, attendees should:

  • be mid-level managers and above
  • have a minimum three years’ management experience
  • have at least three direct reports
  • have significant financial and/or quality responsibility

TENTATIVE SEMINAR SCHEDULE

Monday, June 9

Newspaper Next 2.0: Learn how to use the latest generation of Newspaper Next research to survive in today's heavily disrupted media landscape.

Leading Creativity, Leading Creatively: Executive coach Eli Amdur will show you what steps your news organization must take to create – and sustain – a creative and innovative environment.

Your Leadership Impact: An essential part of this program is the Leadership/Impact (L/I), a 360-degree assessment tool that will provide feedback about your impact on the behavior of others and insights into how you can use your leadership abilities to redirect the culture of your news organization.

Tuesday, June 10

Leadership Ethics: Sanyin Siang from Duke University’s Center for Leadership & Ethics will outline a workable model of leadership based on trust, credibility and community.

The First Amendment: We travel to Washington, D.C., to tour the new Newseum and participate in a lively discussion about the freedoms guaranteed in the First Amendment.

Wednesday, June 11

"Baby on Board" – and Now on Your Payroll: Executive Editor Linda Cunningham shows how the Millennial generation will shape your management and leadership style. Learn what motivates this group and how to increase productivity and collaboration as you lead with greater understanding across the generational divide.

Lessons from the Battlefield: At turning points throughout history, people of vision have stepped forward to lead. Today, newspapers are at such a turning point. We’ll enjoy a special session in Gettysburg with noted military historian Carol Reardon, who will deconstruct the leadership lessons from the pivotal Civil War battle that took place there and show you how they can help you transform your organizations.

Thursday, June 12

Heartaches, Headaches and Hope: Managing Editor Cate Barron talks about the hard work of leading people through major change, based on real-life experiences from the reorganization of her newsroom.

Defining Your Role: Noted consultant and author Alan Weiss helps you put ideas into action, identifying the common mistakes of managers who are new to leadership and how to avoid them.
