Ruth Dunley
Associate Editor, the Ottawa Citizen, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

Ruth Dunley began her journalism career as a reporter holding summer jobs at the London Free Press, Toronto Star and the Ottawa Citizen, where she was hired in 1997. Since then she has been a desker and night city editor before switching to days to become assignment editor in 2000. After a stint as news editor responsible for student programs at the Citizen (apprenticeships, summer program, year-long internships), editor of the Observer section and overseeing the newspaper's convergence initiatives, Ms. Dunley was promoted to associate editor in 2005. She has been responsible for the newspaper's major online journalism projects and continues to run student programs and youth initiatives, which have expanded to include the U.S.-based Critics and Awards Program (better known as Cappies) for high school theatre in Ottawa. Ms. Dunley holds a bachelor of journalism degree, a master of journalism degree and is working on a doctorate in 19th-century American history. She was previously a Fulbright Scholar at the College of William & Mary in Virginia. She works with CanWest Interactive editor Cathy Boucek on a daily basis to collaborate on many of the newspaper's initiatives for younger readers.
