Michael Schlein
Director for Product Development, The New York Times Regional Media Group

Michael Schlein is the Director for Product Development at The New York Times Regional Media Group, based in Tampa. Previously, he managed email and mobile products for The New York Times on the Web. While there, he led development of several lucrative editorial and marketing email products and piloted some of the first wireless efforts at The Times. Mr. Schlein was also part of the team that managed coverage of the events of 9/11 at nytimes.com. He launched the online component of what would become The Nation Challenged Web site, which was later awarded the Public Service Pulitzer.

Prior to NYTimes.com, Mr. Schlein managed product and online teams at several other New York Times Web properties including GolfDigest.com, WineToday.com and the Web sites for the Santa Rosa Press Democrat and The Gainesville Sun (where he started his career at the Times in 1994). While in those engagements, his team won more than half a dozen EPpy and Digital Edge awards in advertising, editorial and design categories.

He was recently recognized with The New York Times company’s prestigious Punch Sulzberger Award. He was cited for his work in leading the Web portion of The Gainesville Sun’s reorganization project, which resulted in a continuous news desk and a digital-centric newsroom.

Mr. Schlein is a graduate of the University of Florida. In his free time he enjoys writing and playing music and spending time with his wife and three children.
