John Hernandez was a project and community manager for the American Press Institute in 2020 and 2021. He helped conceptualize and execute new initiatives and support the communities of practice that API has developed through its programs and projects. Before this role, he worked as a community manager for API’s Trusted Elections Network, a collaborative of journalists and subject matter experts looking to improve election reporting during the 2020 election cycle. He previously held fellowships at APM Reports and Minnesota Public Radio after graduating from Texas State University with a journalism degree. He is a staunch advocate of increased racial diversity in media and spends some of his free time advancing efforts to improve DEI and community engagement in journalism. The rest of his free time is occupied with watching sports, listening to podcasts and reading good books.
